Between green mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, the island is transformed into a magical setting, where the Christmas spirit can be felt in every street, every house and in the hearts of those who visit it. From the beginning of December, Funchal dresses up in thousands of sparkling lights that illuminate avenues, squares and gardens. The famous Christmas Market, located in the central square, offers traditional sweets such as honey cake, broas (cornbread), poncha (a traditional drink) and traditional liqueurs. The Parto Masses, celebrated in the early hours before Christmas, are one of the most traditional moments in Madeira. At each celebration, people come together in N joy, with songs, regional instruments and the taste of homemade liqueurs served outside the church. As New Year’s Eve arrives, the island gets ready for a world-famous spectacle. At the stroke of midnight, the sky over Funchal explodes in colour with a spectacular fireworks display, listed in the Guinness World Records as one of the most impressive in the world.
